Despite its large population and small geographic size, it might surprise you to know Hong Kong has a lot of open space – wetlands, beaches and mountains. If you’re looking to explore Hong Kong’s more peaceful side, consider spending half a day on Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail.

It’s called Dragon’s Back due to the trail’s shape, which resembles a dragon’s back. The undulating path rolls along the ridges from Shek O Peak to Wan Cham Shan, forming the appearance of a dragon’s back.

Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail is considered one of Hong Kong’s best trails, and has garnered many honors including best urban hiking trail in Asia by TIME Magazine. The trail attracts more than just hikers. Don’t be surprised to see people flying kites along the path or jumping off the mountainside on paragliding equipment.

Notable points on the trail include:

  • Shek O Road near To Tei Wan Village: Starting point of the hike.
  • Wan Cham Shan: Here you’ll be on top of a 226-meter-high ridge where you can check out views of Clear Water Bay Peninsula, along with Stanley Peninsula and the South China Sea.
  • Shek O Peak: Here you’re 284 meters above Hong Kong. Check out the sightseeing platform – the ideal spot to catch your breath and check out panoramic views of Shek O, Tai Long Wan and Tung Lung Island.
  • Pottinger Gap: Pottinger Gap is where several trails intersect and marks the beginning of Pottinger Peak Country Trail. Here you’ll find a pavilion you can stop at and check out the landscape over Chai Wan.
  • Tai Long Wan: This is the end of Dragon’s Back Trail. Located here is ‘Big Wave Bay’ where you can take a dip in the refreshing water and cool off after your hike.

While on the 3-mile (5-kilometer) walk, you will pass through lush woodlands and bamboo groves. There is a variety of native flora, including rose myrtle and azaleas, noticeable as you enter the open hillside. Keep your ears and eyes open for the rare barking deer, which has been known to inhabit the forests in the region.

Dragon’s Back Hiking Trail is not one of the most difficult trails in Hong Kong, but it’s no easy stroll either. You should be properly dressed, including hiking shoes. There are no replenishing stations along the trail so be sure you bring enough water and food to get through the hike.
